Tainohama Beach
Included within ‘Muroto-Anan Kaigan Quasi National Park', the 1.5 meter sandy stretch of Tainohama Beach is a picturesque seascape selected from among the 8 Scenic Views of Awa. It also has the distinction of being one of Japan’s 100 most comfortable swimming beaches. The gently sloped face and shallow coastal shelf provides swimmers and beachgoers of all ages with a safe and serene place to bathe. JR Shikoku operates the seasonal Tainohama Station between late July through mid-August, providing beach access from the railway just a mere 3 feet from the sands and shoreline.

Every year, loggerhead turtles come to Ohama Beach to lay their eggs. While shedding salty ‘tears’, the awe-inspiring sight of the turtles laying and nesting their eggs should not be missed. During their prime nesting period lasting 3 months (5/20〜8/20) the beach is cordoned off to general access. Those interested are encouraged to survey nesting at the discretion of attending turtle observers.

Yakuouji Temple
The 23 site of Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage, Yakuouji is currently visited by estimated 800,000 pilgrims and worshippers per year. In 726 A.D., the esteemed Buddhist High Priest Gyoki by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu constructed Yakuouji Temple. It is only temple in all Shikoku Pilgrimage sites which has the principal object of worship at a temple as the Bhaisajyaguru (buddha able to cure all ills) of protecting against misfortune made and promised by Kobo Daishi from imperial order of retired emperor Heijo in 815 A.D. when he was 42 years old. The holy fire attendants are held in 6 and 10:30 every morning and Buddhist monks pray for protecting against misfortune and accomplishment for prayer by pilgrims and worshippers’ application.

Kindly referred to as “Gongensan” by the local residents, this shrine pays homage to Gongen, known by another incarnation as the god that heals warts. Currently, visitors from throughout the prefecture as well as from distant Hanshin, Kyushu and possibly further regions come to make offerings and requests of Gongen and draw water from the well for use in their treatments.

On January 28, 1868 while warring factions were embroiled in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi simultaneously erupting between Osaka and Kyoto, the shogunal vessel Kaiyomaru and the Satsuma clan vessel Kasugamaru fought against each other in Japan’s first modernized maritime battle off the coast of Yuki. Aside from the artifacts placed at the memorial, a number of artifacts from the battle are still kept on display at JR Yuki Station’s Poppo Marine.

The Cherry Blossom Roadway
From late March into early April, the cherry trees lining the road leading into Abu come into full bloom.
