THIS IS MINAMI TOWN
Minami town is located in the southeastern area of Tokushima prefecture. The town’s name Minami is derived from two Chinese characters meaning “beautiful wave”: so earned by the area’s breathtaking seascape. Blessed with rich nature and natural good fishing waterfront, people have inhabited the area since prehistoric times and town was prospering with the time. Various archeological sites and artifacts have been found throughout town, such as relics in the early Jomon Period excavated at the Tai Ruins. The entire region including Minami town is traditionally known as Wasa, with records found at the Heijo Palace ruins indicating the receipt of seaweed offerings from here. In 726 A.D., the esteemed Buddhist High Priest Gyoki by imperial decree of Emperor Shomu constructed Yakuouji Temple. Then in 1807, the shogunate administrative offices (officiating government administration, police and court system) for the Kaifu District were placed here, establishing Minami as the metropolitan center of the district throughout the Meiji Period (1868-1912), strides with which Minami has continued to grow and thrive.
